Salt Pans
The Salt Pans, between Trapani and Marsala, reached the height of their importance in the 19th Century when salt was exported as far away as Norway. At that time this was one of the country's main exports. Long hot summers and the impermeable nature of the land made these marshes very productive. At one time the Archimedes screws (used to raise water from basin to basin) were powered by the numerous windmills, some of which have later been restored and are a magnificent sight.
