Day 2) Assisi

Half day tour with free time in the afternoon.
We arrive first in lower Assisi at the Baroque church of Santa
Maria degli Angeli which is built over and around the ancient
church reconstructed by St. Francis of Assisi. Continuing up the hill to upper Assisi we visit the Church of Santa Chiara, the
central Piazza with its evidence of the earlier Roman city and
lastly the magnificent Basilica of San Francesco. The upper
church is where frescoes by Giotto and his followers depicting
the life of St. Francis can be seen, the lower church includes a
“Deposition” by Pietro Lorenzetti and a Madonna by Cimabue, and the foundation of the church below houses the tomb of St Francis.
